Next week we are proudly co-hosting the 3rd Annual UK Political Psychology Conference. It is a virtual event and it takes place throughout the week (11th-15th January  2021) with pre-recorded video presentions and live roundtable events in the morning and afternoon. Another exciting opportunity for us to meet virtually is at the 2021 ISPP Annual Conference which will take place from July 11-13, 2021. The conference is virtual again this year and it will be very busy. Not only does it host cutting edge panels in political psychology, but also for the first time this year there is a very low registration fee available for colleagues who have not sent in their proposals but wish to only attend as audience. Allow me draw your attention to three searches for political/social science faculty positions at the Technical University of Munich, for which the due date for applications is quickly approaching (at the end of the month).  The calls for these applications originally went out in late November/early December, but I have gotten the feedback that those announcements may have slipped through below the radar, especially regarding the Mößbauer professorship, where the omnibus search announcement might have obscured that the search is open to - and explicitly welcomes applications from - social scientists, including empirical political scientists, ethicists, and normative political theorists.   I am sending this email with a "translational" excerpt of the search announcements to alert you to these opportunties, and to encourage interested candidates to apply.

(1) Tenure Track Assistant Professor or Tenured Associate Professor for Political Psychology at the Hochschule für Politik at the Technical University of Munich.

This search is for a regular-rank faculty position at the Hochschule für Politik (HfP), the combined Department of Political Science and School of Public and International Affairs, at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), one of Germany's leading research universities.  The position is open with regard to substantive focus (within the broadly conceived field of political psychology) and with regard to geographic focus.  We are looking above all for a first-rate scholar with an internationally recognized active research agenda and record - or strong promise - of important scholarly contributions, especially in the form of peer-reviewed publications that advance the research frontier in political psychology.  Reputation in (and contributions to) the discipline and the broader community will also be considered. (3) TUM Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) Mößbauer Tenure Track Assistant Professorship for Outstanding High-Potential Early-Career Scholars

Mößbauer professorships are intended to allow TUM to recruit researchers who may be working on exciting and emerging topics, for which no designated searches exist (yet) and/or which might cut across two or more disciplines.  While these positions are unusually open with regard to substantive focus, as well as disciplinary and methodological approach, applicants are expected to contribute to TUM in one of several broad issue areas or fields identified in the call for applications as the focus for the current year - and applicants should spell out in their applications how their research (and teaching) will allow them to make that contribution.  (While the positions are not ex ante associated with any particular discipline or department, each Mößbauer TT assistant professor is ultimately appointed in association with one of the TUM schools or departments, where s/he teaches courses at the Bachelor's, Master's and PhD level, possibly with outreach to the rest of the university.)

5 Mößbauer professorships are available for 2021.  We expect *at least* one of those five appointments to go to a scholar from the social sciences (conditional on the receipt of strong applications, of course).  Of the three substantive foci for this year, two may lend themselves to applications from social scientists, including politcal scientists and/or applied philosophy/ethics scholars (it is up to each applicant to make the case for his or her contribution to the focus area of his/her choice):

- prevention and health care

- social and political analysis of drivers and/or consequences of technological transformations

For the "prevention and health care" focus, any health policy scholar (incl. economists, sociologists, political scientists, public policy/administration scholars) is in principle eligible to apply (along with scholars from other fields of course), provided that his/her research speaks to prevention and health care.

Political and social scientists might want to take note, in particular, of the second focus, which in the official call is labeled "Social and Educational Sciences for Technology Transformations" since this focus area was added for 2021 in recognition of the creation of the new TUM School of the Social Sciences, which will bring together the HfP/TUM School of Governance, the TUM School of Education, and TUM-MCTS.  (For now, choose "TUM School of Governance" from the "Corresponding TUM School/Department" dropdown menu of the online application.)  Here, specifically, we hope to receive compelling applications from scholars with a background in the social sciences with a research agenda involving any aspect of transformative technological change.

As the IAS call for applications says, evidence of an initial scholarly "breakthrough" is expected, which may include a prominent publication, a major grant, or other recognition that the applicant is beginnign to shaping the research frontier in their field.  A key criterion is having the ambition (backed up by indications for strong promise) for developing a novel approach or field and having a highly innovative research agenda.

FOR ALL THREE POSITIONS:  TUM is in many ways comparable to MIT or Caltech in the US or ETH Zurich in Switzerland.  Given TUM's special strengths in engineering, the applied sciences, and medicine/health sciences, including its emphasis on "human-centered engineering" and "responsible research and innovation", both the HfP and the IAS are especially interested in scholars whose work contributes to (and/or who take a special interest in) understanding the social and political drivers and consequences of technological innovation and change.

The TUM uses a system for tenure and promotion similar to most major research universities in the United States and Canada to allow for career advancement within the university, conditional on rigorous external and international expert reviews.  All tenure track appointments (http://www.tum.de/faculty-tenure-track) are eligible through that system for tenure review and promotion to tenure associate professor after (usually) six years.  Both positions allow for appointments at that level.  For the the HfP position, an initiall appointment at the rank of tenure associate professor is also possible for more advanced applicants; scholars appointed at that level are eligible for subsequent promotion to full professor through the TUM faculty career advancement system (for more information, start at https://www.tum.de/en/about-tum/working-at-tum/faculty-recruiting/)

Note that the search for the two HfP positions and for the IAS position are separate searches, and I would encourage scholars whose interests and profile fits both positions to submit their applications to both search committees.

However, since the list of items can be a bit mystifying for applicants not familiar with Germanic academic customs, let me offer an annotated list here:

1) Résumé, certificates, credentials
[Translation: CV + transcripts; if you have an electronic copy of your actual PhD degree, send it as well, especially if your graduate transcript does not indicate the receipt of the doctorate]

2) List of publications
[It is customary in Germany to submit a list of publications, so entitled, as a separate document.  You can then omit them from your CV but you don't need to.]

3) Three selected publications with a summary (max. 1,000 characters) of their impact on your research profile
[Send electronic copies of your 3 best/most important papers/works (published or not) + a short (and search committees really mean short; it's 1000 characters, not 1000 words) statement about how they fit into your research agenda]

4) Presentation of research strategy
[A research statement or research agenda; be sure to discuss - generally concisely but not just superficially - completed and ongoing research projects, as well as plans for the near future.  Keep an eye on the big picture and make sure you convey your main contributions clearly and to provide some sense how it all hangs together.]

5) List of courses taught
[If there are courses you would have liked or in a possible future at the TUM would like to teach, feel free to also list those - under a separate subheading but in the same document or as part of the next one:]

6) Descriptive statement on teaching strategy and philosophy
[As a separate document, a regular teaching statement; "descriptive" means genuinely informative]

7) Details of third-party funding
[Grants and fellowship you have received from extra-mural sources or for which you may have an application pending, if any.  Such grants and fellowships are presumably already listed on your CV; this document gives you a chance to (briefly) elaborate on what has been funded etc.]

8) Letters of recommendation/names and addresses of three references
[Applications for the Mößbauer position require at least one letter of recommendation from each applicant.  For the HfP position, letters of recommendation are not required to apply, but you need to specify the names and contact information of three possible recommenders, as a separate document.]

It is recommended to send materials in PDF format and to include your last name in the filename of each document you submit to ensure it will be easily associated with your application.  You can combine multiple documents in one file, but make sure each starts on a separate page. Be sure to submit all of the requested materials lest your application will be deemed incomplete, which may result in being excluded from further consideration.

Call for Papers

The online conference "Open Science and Replicability in the Behavioural and Social Sciences" wants to provide a platform to exchange, discuss and develop innovative ways to deal with open science in practice. The conference focuses on the following central topics:
- Methodological implications of Open Science
- Preregistration
- Open Data and Open Access
- Crowdsourcing
- Replication Crisis and Open Science

We call for submissions that address the topics above including empirical examples of replication studies and Open Science practices, methodological considerations, and concrete technical ways to implement Open Science. The conference is intended to serve as a platform for discussion and presentation and will be framed by two keynotes, including one by Prof. Simine Vazire, Ph.D (University of Melbourne, School of Psychological Sciences, Australia).

We welcome submissions in form of classic conference presentations, scientific posters (for a virtual poster session via gather.town), or short thesis papers for workshop discussions (e.g., practical or technical implementation of Open Science; advantages and disadvantages of Open Science practices). We invite scholars from across the spectrum of empirical behavioural and social sciences to submit their papers.

1)    Does every life count the same? Evidence from a Triage Experiment

Marc Helbling (University of Mannheim), Rahsaan Maxwell (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill), Simon Munzert (Hertie School), Richard Traunmüller (University of Mannheim)

This paper elicits citizen preferences in the moral dilemma of triage decisions. The experiment is framed in the context of the looming consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on resource allocation in German hospitals. We aim to identify key heuristics applied in the population to make these ethically difficult choices and how they vary across subpopulations. We investigate to what extent people do not discriminate and base their choices on the patients? chances of survival, to what extent they base their decisions on utilitarian considerations and to what extent they give preference to patients that belong to their in-group. The analyses focus among others on discrimination against immigrants. The analyses are based on 23 waves of an online rolling cross-sectional survey with around 17?000 respondents in Germany between April 2020 and March 2021. More detailed analyses explore how preference structures vary over time and space conditional on regional numbers of corona cases.

2)    Who Should Get Vaccinated First? A Conjoint Experiment on Welfare Chauvinism Against Universal Preventive Healthcare During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Merlin Schaeffer & Mikkel Haderup Larsen (University of Copenhagen)

Only a universal vaccination program, which immunizes the population irrespective of origin and ethnicity ? similar to the spread of the Coronavirus itself ? will effectively fight the public health threat posed by COVID-19. This qualifies the COVID-19 vaccination program as an interesting case to test for welfare chauvinism. On that premise, we conducted a pre-registered paired vignette experiment during the first week of the Danish vaccination program, trying to find out whether recent immigrants and Muslim minorities are regarded as less deserving of critical access to preventive healthcare amid a pandemic. Our results show that Muslims and immigrants are indeed systematically seen as less deserving of a vaccination. Contra our pre-registered hypotheses, we find only weak evidence that immigrants or Muslims are penalized more harshly for not having followed the guidelines on face mask wearing and social distancing, or for having diabetes because of an unhealthy lifestyle. Compared with previous research, we exploit a timely and significant event to study welfare chauvinism, disentangle minority status from stereotypes about their anti-social behavior and irresponsible lifestyles, and use a paired vignette design, which has been shown to  produce more valid results than standard survey experiments.

3)    Protection, but no Control: Liberal Democracy and the Politicization of Crisis Response Policies

Researchers agree that the COVID-19 pandemic poses a complex policy challenge for decisionmakers and that governments should quickly augment their response capacity. In liberal democracies, it is important that such increases in state capacities have some degree of popular support, in order to be effective. Therefore, it is important to understand how the public supports different policy options and why some individuals are more favourable to anti-crisis policies than others. In this paper, we analyse the politicization of four dimensions of crisis response capacities against a pandemic based on a two-wave survey experiment in Switzerland. Our findings show that respondents support investment in materials to prevent future crises as well as quotas for health care workers. The results show also support for a leadership role by the federal government instead of lower levels of government, but indicated limited support for mandatory contact tracing efforts. In addition, those who are afraid of the health consequences of the crisis tend to support more state response capacity. Contrariwise, political ideology does not seem to explain support for crisis response. Finally, the support for a federal solution increased during the second wave of a pandemic, whereas approval of contact tracing declined.

4)    Conditional Solidarity - Attitudes towards support for others during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic presents a unique opportunity to study how humans allocate scarce resources in times of hardship. We investigate whether people display selfish or altruistic behaviour and whether their decision making follows the same logic of reciprocal solidarity during this pandemic as deservingness perception research in non-crisis times would suggest. We test these hypotheses for the three central types of policies governments have adopted in response to the COVID-19 crisis: the (potential) rationing of ICU care, the provision of government aid to the self-employed and small businesses, and restrictions on cross-border movements. Three original conjoint survey experiments administered to an incentivised online panel in Switzerland in late April and early May 2020 show that people indeed base their judgement of who deserves to be included in solidaristic arrangements on an underlying logic of reciprocity and identity, as hypothesised by the literature on deservingness perceptions.

5)    The Perceived Deservingness of COVID-19 Healthcare: Evidence from Two Conjoint Experiments among Dutch Respondents

Tim Reeskens, Femke Roosma & Evelien Wanders (Tilburg University)

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, governments, supported by health experts and ethicists, released guidelines about which groups should receive priority access to intensive care treatment and vaccines in case resources are limited. To achieve legitimacy, public legitimacy is important, as deservingness theory informs us that not all groups are equally perceived as deserving of assistance. Relying on a probability-based sample representative of the Dutch population (N = 1,601), participants were offered two choice-based conjoint experiments that measured what deservingness criteria matter most in respectively priority access to intensive care (in case of an equal chance of survival), and priority access to a COVID-19 vaccine. The results foremost show that noncompliance with government measures aimed at preventing the spread of the coronavirus impedes perceived deservingness. By contrast, being employed in the ?crucial? sectors (i.e. health care and to a lesser extent education), leads to a higher perceived priority. Our results indicate that control and reciprocity are important criteria to determine people?s deservingness of preventive and curative COVID-19 health care.

Call for Applications to the International Society of Political Psychology Academy 2021

The ISPP Academy is currently accepting applications for its annual three-day workshop held prior to the annual ISPP meeting. The Academy will take place online, July 8th - July 10th, 2021.

Overview of the ISPP Academy

The ISPP Academy aims to train interested faculty and students in both foundational research and cutting-edge methodologies in the area of political psychology. The Academy's central objective is to spread interest and promote training in political psychology around the world. This is done through bringing together early career scholars in political psychology and related fields with leading political psychology academics who can provide insights into the leading research in the field and allow for detailed discussion on topics of interest to participants.

The 2021 ISPP Academy will feature lectures and several Q&A sessions with prominent political psychologists from around the world. This year's confirmed instructors include Rezarta Bilali (New York University), Kevin Durrheim (University of KwaZulu-Natal), Stanley Feldman (Stony Brook University), Roberto González (Pontificia Universidad Católica De Chile), Leonie Huddy (Stony Brook University), Joanne Miller (University of Delaware), Catarina Kinvall (Lund University), and George E. Marcus (Williams College).

Format for the 2021 Academy

In light of the current global pandemic, the 2021 ISPP Annual Conference and the ISPP Academy will be held entirely virtually. We recognize that this entails participants connecting from multiple time zones, so in order to accommodate this the Q&A sessions will be scheduled LIVE in MULTIPLE TIME ZONES. In addition to the Q&A sessions, there will be plenty of opportunities for fellows to interact and network with each other and with Academy instructors, including virtual coffee breaks and drinks, roundtables with Academy alumni and focused discussion forums bringing together participants focused on similar areas of research. These will provide opportunities to discuss your research and interests in more detail with other Academy fellows and hopefully make connections for future research and academic opportunities. More details on these additional events will be provided as we get closer to the dates of the Academy.

ISPP Academy fellows will also receive membership in ISPP for one year, and and a 50% discount on registration for the 2021 ISPP Annual Meeting, which is already calculated in the registration prices paid for the ISPP Academy.

Description:
The social structure of European societies is undergone profound changes in recent years. Educational expansion, mass immigration, decline of the industrial sector, internal migration to cities, changing gender roles, and overageing are just some of the major dynamics. These transformations are not without consequence: they lead to new inequalities and uncertainty for particular societal groups. The COVID-19 pandemic uncovers these developments very clearly. And not surprisingly, this social change leads to political change. Political conflicts experience a transformation and restructuring. New ideological conflicts arise; existing and new parties situate themselves along these new lines of political conflict. Overall, we can expect that the outlined social transformations change patterns of participation, voting behavior, representation and party competition. Hence, this panel seeks to investigate the changing political conflicts in European societies from different angles. Papers might address for instance the following questions: What kind of reactions do social transformations induce among the political behavior of both, citizens or elites? How does the changing social structure affect political representation? How do different social groups perceive representation in politics and responsiveness? Do processes of societal transformation relate to democratic attitudes? How does social change relate to different forms of political engagement? Under what circumstances do disadvantaged groups in society opt for ?voice? and when do they chose to ?exit? the political arena? How do political parties react to recent social changes? Beyond these questions, we welcome contributions that explore the changing political conflicts in European societies.

Unterstützung: AK Soziale Bewegungen

Die vielfältigen Formen und das Ausmaß der Unterstützung für Geflüchtete in den Jahren um 2015 gilt als ?Sternstunde für die Zivilgesellschaft? (Schiffauer) in Deutschland. Es entstanden in ländlichen wie auch urbanen Regionen neue Initiativen, Netzwerke und Engagementformen. Parallel zu diesem Aktivierungsschub hat sich auch die Polarisierung der (Zivil-) Gesellschaft im Zuge der Debatten um Zuwanderung seit 2015 weiter verstärkt. Neben menschenrechts- und demokratieorientierten Bewegungen mobilisieren zunehmend auch Akteure, die eine bestimmten Gruppen vorbehaltene exklusive Gesellschaft anstreben. Vor dem Hintergrund dieser beiden Entwicklungen ? einer beispiellosen Aktivierung und einer zunehmenden Polarisierung der Zivilgesellschaft vor allem in Bezug auf die Themen Migration/Integration, gesellschaftliche Pluralität/Diversität, Zugehörigkeit und Identität ? fragt das Panel nach dem Wandel von Konfliktmustern und dem Wandel der Zivilgesellschaft als solcher. - Veränderungen im bürgerschaftlichen Engagement und lokalen zivilgesellschaftlichen Netzwerken seit 2015
- Dynamiken lokaler Konflikte seit 2015
- Wahrnehmung dieser Mobilisierungen und Konflikte durch Migrant*innen und Geflüchtete und ihre Organisationen
- Theoretische und empirische Diskussionen zum Verhältnis Zivilgesellschaft, Protest und Politik auf lokaler Ebene
- Langfristige Spuren des ?langen Sommers der Migration? in sozialen Bewegungen, zivilgesellschaftlichen Organisationen oder Engagementstrukturen
- Konsequenzen der Corona-Pandemie auf lokale Organisierung und Mobilisierung.

Wenngleich das Panel auf den deutschen Kontext fokussiert, sind auch vergleichende Beiträge willkommen, die Entwicklungen in Deutschland mit anderen Fällen kontrastieren.

Herewith, I?d like to share some news with you and all researchers interested in populism, emotions, framing, media bias and social identity.
Within the H2020 DEMOS project, Agneta Fischer and I from Amsterdam Interdisciplinary Centre for Emotion (AICE) collaborated with colleagues from Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC) at the University of Amsterdam (Pere-Lluís Huguet-Cabot, Verna Dankers, Ekaterina Shutova), and recently we published two papers at high-ranking conferences<https://scholar.google.at/citations?view_op=top_venues&hl=en&vq=eng_computationallinguistics> (EMNLP and EACL) in the field of computational linguistics (as listed below).

we are looking back at a great 2nd  scientific meeting of our network!
We had more than 450 registered participants and ca. 70 presentations divided over 20 different panel sessions. Thanks again to all the presenters for their presentations on their fascinating research, and to all participants for your contributions to the discussions, and again a very big thank you to the local organizing committee in Jena! Two postdoctoral positions (m/f/d) in digital media and democracy
Yannis Theocharis, Professor and Chair of Digital Governance at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), is inviting applications for two postdoctoral positions in his research team at the Bavarian School of Public Policy (Hochschule für Politik München - HfP) / TUM School of Governance in Munich, Germany, beginning September 2021.
The Bavarian School of Public Policy is an interdisciplinary institute for the study of politics and public policy, and the TUM School of Governance its corresponding department at TUM, one of Germany's top research universities.
The Chair of Digital Governance is a research and teaching unit at the Bavarian School of Public Policy / TUM School of Governance focused on the effects of technology on democracy. The Chair's research and teaching agenda is interdisciplinary and has a particular interest in the application of advanced quantitative and computational methods to tackle a broad range of questions at the intersection of digital media and politics.
We welcome applications with research proposals on any topic pertaining to the impact of technology on democracy, but are particularly interested in projects addressing the following topics:

  *   New forms of political and civic participation
  *   Collective action organization (political mobilization and protest, social movements, civil society)
  *   Incivility online and its consequences for democracy and platform governance
  *   Polarization, disinformation, and conspiracy theories
  *   Citizen voice in non-democratic regimes
  *   Electoral campaigns and political communication more broadly
  *   Politics and artificial intelligence
Analytical skills and the capacity for independent social scientific research will be key selection criteria. Successful applicants will be expected to develop and pursue their own research within the overarching agenda of the Chair of Digital Governance, collaborate with members of the Chair, and make independent contributions to teaching.
Your Qualifications

  *   A PhD (or very close to completion) in political science or a related social science discipline or interdisciplinary field
  *   Advanced skills in quantitative methods, experiments and knowledge of causal inference techniques, text-as-data methods including NLP and machine-learning. Using R is a must, additional skills in Python an asset
  *   Ability for excellent academic research evidenced through internationally visible publications, presentations at international conferences, third-party funding or related research activities
  *   Ability to teach classes on information technology and politics, digital governance, or on related topics
  *   Ambition to pursue an active research agenda and eagerness to make both theoretically exciting and empirically important contributions
  *   Enthusiasm for working in a team as well as ability to work independently
  *   Strong ability to communicate in spoken and written English (applicants who do not have a degree from an English-language university or program, please indicate proficiency).

  *   Conduct cutting-edge research and publish in top journals (on your own and jointly)

1 The Conference Venue

IMPORTANT: You will need an access code to enter the conference venue. Please make sure to register at the conference homepage so that we can reach out to you with the necessary details.

2 Conference Registration
If you want to join us as a participant, please register on the conference webpage until Friday March 12th. Registration is free of charge.

3 General Spirit of the Conference
We are eager to facilitate an exciting and productive conference that is at the same time also an enjoyable social event. At a conference we expose our new ideas to a larger audience of colleagues which is always a leap of faith. As organisers of the conference, we formulated a mission statement that reflects our values and summarises the spirit of the event we imagine.
PolMeth Europe Mission Statement
We appreciate the contribution of each participant and are curious about what they are proposing. Our comments intend to help improve their work. In offering feedback, we are mindful that we all have different personal backgrounds and different academic upbringings. We consider our diversity to be one of our core assets. Our different viewpoints ultimately help further our joint goal: better science.


4 Social Events During PolMeth Europe
To further the community building, we also envisioned social events during the conference.
polmeth::rejuvenate(paper)
A lot of us have papers on which we already worked for maybe already a couple of weeks or even months. At one point, however, the project came to an end. Not because it was particularly bad, but more important things came along that crowded out our attention for the project. A considerable amount of time already went into this research project, which means there are sunk costs. It is a pity that these papers are dormant in our drawers. What if someone came along who thinks that this project is worth a fresh look and would help you realise it?
At PolMeth, we want to create a market where people can meet to unearth the sunk costs in these projects. We want to match those who have a project with those who might have an interest in restarting it. In our virtual conference space, there will be a large poster where you can post your paper projects. Other participants can read the abstracts and signal interest in a particular project. That way, the original author knows whether there is any interest from others to follow up and can decide to reach out to potential co-authors to keep working on things.
In case you are interested to participate, please send us via email the abstract of your dormant paper that you have already been working on ideally until March 12th. We will then add it to the mural with the paper proposals.
We are keen to see this initiative at work and are looking for a dedicated group of peers to take this idea even further. Why not establishing such a paper market place at a larger scale? If you want to discuss how to develop this market place, meet me (Chris Arnold) anywhere in the conference space.
Feedback Murals
At a first conference of what has to ambition of becoming one of many, feedback is crucial to adapt the format to the need of participants. Does the workshop meet all expectations? What worked well? Where is room for improvement?
In addition, researchers also very often have good ideas about things that would be awesome to do or engage in beyond just the academic event. Think of all kind of infrastructures, platforms, discussions, software, data et cetera that such a PolMeth Europe community could create and benefit from. We want to give a space to all these ideas that might be in the back of your mind. Please find a virtual mural at the central plaza on gather.town where you can leave your feedback.
Social Events on Gather.Town
The platform itself is a great place to socialise. Always feel free to hang out there before and after the main events. We are also planning a special event on Friday evening once all panels are over.

Call for papers



On the 10th of June 2021 we (the Democratic Innovations and Legitimacy Research Group<https://soc.kuleuven.be/centre-for-political-research/demoinno/democratic-innovations-legitimacy-research-group> at the KU Leuven) are organizing the NEXT GDC symposium<https://soc.kuleuven.be/centre-for-political-research/demoinno/events-1/10-june-2021-early-career-symposium-in-deliberation-research-next-gdc-symposium>. We invite Early Career Scholars in the field of deliberation to come together (virtually) for in-depth discussion of ongoing research, panel debates about the state and future of the field and networking.

Background

Concerns about democratic crises abound: lack of democratic legitimacy, uncivil political discourse, societal inequality, populism, polarization, and short termism. Deliberation in its many shapes and forms is often considered an answer to these problems. Ranging from participatory processes to deliberative debate styles, deliberative approaches are popular in the quest of improving the (perceived) functioning of democracy. Furthermore, a systemic understanding of deliberation has also provided a new lens to understand also traditionally non-deliberative spaces such as protests and social movements as essential parts of the wider deliberative system.



Several questions remain: What role can participatory processes play in strengthening democratic outcomes, including equality and (perceived) legitimacy? What is the deliberative quality and impact of political communication? How do new forms of decision-making and will-formation connect to existing representative systems? And many more.

We invite both empirical and theoretical work on deliberation, broadly understood. Interdisciplinary work that approaches the field from a psychological, anthropological, sociological, philosophical, or communication science perspective is most welcome.



Goals

The NEXT GDC symposium aims at bringing together scholars in the wider research field of deliberation and democratic innovation. We specifically target Early Career Scholars, many of whom have had little chance in the past year to formally and informally meet their peers, receive feedback on their work and exchange ideas. Specifically, our goals are:


  *   In-depth feedback and discussion of research papers (participants will be required to read the papers in their workshops and serve as discussants)
  *   Giving early career scholars a platform for meta-debates about the state and future of deliberation research

·       Informal connecting to peers in your research field

We strive to include all voices, particularly those that are traditionally underrepresented in academia. Please decide for yourself whether you are an Early Career Scholar. Early Career Committee (ECC)

Dear Early Career colleague,

The ISPP Early Career Committee (ECC) is now accepting applications to the 2021-2022 ECC! To make our committee more representative of ISPP's membership, we encourage applications from every continent and from across disciplines (e.g., political scientists, social/political psychologists). General evaluation of the candidates will be based on the clarity of their statement, experience in political psychology, fit with the ECC mission, and ability to devote due time to the ECC. We are keen to ensure that the ECC is representative of its members, therefore representation will be a consideration in the evaluation process as well.

By working with members of the ISPP, organizing events at the annual meeting, supporting ECC activities throughout the year (e.g., Travel Award, newsletter), and facilitating communication across the discipline through social media, the ECC is an integral part of the ISPP community. This is an excellent opportunity to meet and work with other members of ISPP, provide input into the ECC, and enhance your curriculum vitae with international committee experience.

We encourage applicants who are graduate students or within 8 years post-graduate career.

Each member serves a two-year term, except Chair-Elect, which is a three-year commitment, and for this year only, one Web Coordinator (see below). Each year we aim to fill one of the two positions for each subcommittee so that first-year ECC members are paired with second-year ECC members with experience in that position (although this is not always possible). You may apply for more than one position (see below). All Committee members are encouraged - but not required - to attend ISPP?s annual meeting.

A selection committee comprised of ECC members and Governing Council members will review the applications. The 2021-2022 ECC will be announced by the end of May with the new term beginning at the end of the annual meeting in July.

AVAILABLE POSITIONS FOR 2021-22

Chair-Elect (1): Working under the current chair, this position is responsible for learning the ins and outs of the ECC, in preparation for taking the lead the following year. Duties as chair include writing reports to the Governing Council, overseeing the ECC budget, and representing the interests of Early Career Scholars in ISPP. This position includes three years of service to ECC; as Chair-Elect (2021-22), Chair (2022-23), and the final year of service is in the capacity of Ex-Officio Chair (2023-2024). Desirable qualifications for this position are: a) previous leadership/management experiences, and b) previous engagement within ISPP.

Mentoring Luncheon Coordinator (1): Arranges the mentoring luncheon organized at the annual meeting. This position includes two years of service (2021-23). The selected applicant will be working with a second-year ECC member who has experience coordinating the Luncheon for the 2021 Annual Meeting.

Newsletter Editor (1): Solicits articles and announcements for the Early Career Scholars newsletter that is published twice a year. This position includes two years of service (2021-23). The selected applicant will be working with a second-year ECC member who has experience coordinating the Newsletter in the previous term.

Web Resources Coordinator (2): Manages all web-related ECC files and responsible for updating the ECC Blog, Facebook, Twitter, and Medium accounts. Note that one Web Resource Coordinator will serve a one year term (2021-2022) while the other coordinator will serve two years (2021-2023). Please indicate your willingness to do one of these terms in the application form.

Populism and democracy have a love-hate relationship. While the emphasis of popular sovereignty in populism can be said to be inherently democratic, its anti-pluralist message seems at odds with a liberal understanding of democracy. In this session of the Populism Seminar our speakers will discuss pressing questions on the relationship between populism and (liberal) democracy.

# Sarah de Lange: The populist radical right and academic freedom: promoting pluralism or constraining academic freedom?
Across the world populist radical right parties are increasingly focusing on (higher) education as an area of contestation. Populist radical right efforts to curtail academic freedom in countries such as Brazil, Hungary, Poland and Turkey have been extensively documented, and have condemned by international institutions, such as However, about the approach taken to academic freedom by the populist radical right in Western Europe less is known.  This presentation explores the approach taken to academic freedom and higher education by populist radical right parties in Western Europe along three dimensions:
*        Programmatic: (How do populist radical right parties discuss academic freedom and higher education in their electoral manifestos, and what kinds of policy reforms do they propose?)
*        Parliamentary: (How do populist radical right parties discuss academic freedom and higher education in the parliamentary arena, and how do they vote on reform proposals?)
*        Extraparliamentary: (What kinds of extra-parliamentary strategies (e.g. suing scholars, reporting points for left-wing teachers) do populist radical right parties employ to curtail academic freedom?)
The preliminary exploration attempts to identify relevant patterns in approached taken by populist radical right parties across Western Europe, and present potential explanations for such patterns. It will also discuss what populist radical right parties approaches towards academic freedom can tell us about their relationship to liberal democracy.
# Roula Nezi: The People and the Nation: Conceptions of Nationhood and the Support for Radical Parties in Europe (with Carsten Wegscheider, Uni Salzburg)
Voters and parties hold different views on who belongs to the nation and to Europe. Previous research suggests that radical left parties promote social and cultural diversity while radical right parties are seen as exclusionary and focus on the ethnic homogeneity of the nation. Despite the centrality of national identity, especially for the radical right parties, we know relatively little about voters' self-understanding of nationalism and Europeanism and how it affects their level of support for radical parties.  By employing a multilevel latent class analysis and regression models on individual level data across 19 European countries we demonstrate that inclusionary and exclusionary conceptions of nationhood are related to the support for radical left and radical right parties, respectively. Our results thus make important contribution to the study of nationalism as well as to the study of voting behaviour in a comparative European perspective.

We call for submissions in the form of  Registered Reports<https://www.cos.io/initiatives/registered-reports> for a special issue on the upcoming German federal elections 2021.

We invite open topic studies that employ 2021 GLES survey data to examine relevant questions in times of political change and crises surrounding the German federal election.



This call will be of particular interest to scholars who value rigorous and transparent research and early career researchers interested in a publication pathway where success depends on the novelty, theoretical relevance, and rigorous execution of a research idea rather than the eventual empirical results.

Wir haben eine PhD-Stelle im Rahmen des Exzellenzclusters Religion und 
Politik zu besetzen (anbei die Ausschreibung). Im Projekt beschäftigen 
wir uns mit der fachlich integrativen Analyse von Themen wie der 
wahrgenommenen gesellschaftlichen Marginalisierung, dem individuellen 
und kollektiven Umgang mit gesellschaftlichen Krisen, dem Glauben an 
Verschwörungstheorien, sowie der wahrgenommenen Bedrohung durch 
ethnisch-religiöse Minderheiten.

Liebe alle,

zwar ist morgen als Bewerbungsfrist angegeben, aber es sind auch ein 
paar Tage später (übers Wochenende) noch Bewerbungen willkommen. Daher 
würde ich mich freuen, wenn die Ausschreibung noch an möglicherweise 
geeignete Kandidat*innen weitergeleitet würde.

Ergänzende Information zur Sprache:

In der Ausschreibung steht, dass "sehr gutes" Englisch und "gutes" 
Deutsch erforderlich ist. Der Grund dafür ist, dass zwar prinzipiell auf 
Englisch unterrichtet werden kann, aber dies für einige Kurse in unseren 
Studiengängen nicht möglich ist. Es bestünde also mehr Flexibilität, 
wenn die Person auf dieser Stelle in der Lage wäre, auch Lehre auf 
Deutsch anzubieten (nicht unbedingt sofort, aber vielleicht innerhalb 
von ein oder zwei Jahren). Für eine solche Post-Doc-Stelle beträgt die 
Lehrverpflichtung zwei Kurse pro Semester.

Oliver Christ (FernUniversität in Hagen) und Mathias Kauff (Medical School Hamburg) suchen zum 1.10.2021 eine*n Doktorand*in für ein von der Deutschen Stiftung Friedensforschung finanziertes Projekt zu sozialen Normen und Intergruppenkontakt. 

Es handelt sich um eine 65%-Stelle, die die Möglichkeit der Promotion bietet. Dienstort ist Hamburg. In den ersten zwei Jahren steht die Projektarbeit im Vordergrund, im dritten Jahr kann die Promotion finalisiert werden und es müssen im geringen Ausmaß Aufgaben in der Lehre übernommen werden (z.B. Durchführung von zwei Seminaren).

The Special issue will be published in English.



We invite open topic studies  in the form of Registered Reports<https://osf.io/rr/> that employ 2021 GLES survey data to examine relevant questions in times of political change and crises surrounding the German federal election: After 16 years of Angela Merkel as chancellor, these elections mark a watershed in German politics. The race for her successor is wide open. Simultaneously, it is unclear how long the Covid-19 pandemic and its corresponding restrictions will dominate the political agenda in Germany.

we are hiring a predoc for three years at the Department of Political Science at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany.

Fluency in English is required, some command of German is a plus.

The position is tied to the ERC Consolidator project POLITSOLID: Experimental Analyses of Political Solidarities in European Democracies (PI Achim Goerres). We are conducting all kinds of experiments to find causal effects of political solidarities.

The ideal candidate should care about the human motivation for political behaviour and be enthusiastic about all kinds of methods involving experiments and programming.

The net monthly salary after taxes and health insurance is ~ 1,700 ?.

The Journal of Open Psychology Data (JOPD) is devoting a Special Issue on data for psychological research on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The potential scope can be broad, as long as it presents data for secondary analyses in psychology to bring awareness to and promote understanding of complex personal, societal, and political issues arising from pandemics. Social distance and security measures may, for instance, affect the relationship among individuals and political support. We encourage submissions that include the psychological and social impact of Covid-19 on various population groups and countries.

We are pleased to invite you to a symposium on the Psychology of Places, brought to you by the European Association of Social Psychology. The event will take place virtually on 4?5 November 2021.

The aim of this symposium is to bring together diverse research perspectives on the relation between places and psychological processes. A growing body of research investigates relationships between people and the places they occupy. At the foundation of this line of inquiry is the assumption that places, locations, and contexts are deeply imbued with social meaning, which in turn interacts with individual differences in personality, affect, cognition, and intergroup processes to influence judgments and behaviors.

This symposium will feature keynote talks from Keith Payne (University of North Carolina) and Mary Murphy (Indiana University Bloomington), as well as talks from Christophe Blaison (Université de Paris), Jimmy Calanchini (University of California Riverside), Drexler James (Denison University), Maria Lewicka (Nicolaus Copernicus University), Tobias Ebert (University of Mannheim), Emily Esposito (University of California Riverside), Iniobong Essien (Leuphana Universität Lüneburg), and Heidi Vuletich (Indiana University Bloomington).

In order to make the event feasible for scientists across a wide variety of time zones, the event is scheduled on both days from 16:00?20:00 Central European Time / 8:00am?12:00pm Pacific Daylight Time. In addition to talks, the symposium will feature break sessions to facilitate collaboration and networking.
The symposium will be held via Qiqo and participation is free of charge. However, attendance will be limited to 150 attendees, and registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

·         #SMSociety will switch from being an annual conference to a biennial conference. After 2022, the next iteration of #SMSociety will be in the summer of 2024 (exact date, location and format TBD).

·         The Program Committee for #SMSociety will be authors who have submitted their papers to the conference for consideration. For a submission to be considered, one author from each submission is required to peer review (double blind) three other conference submissions.

·         Instead of Full and WIP paper submissions, #SMSociety will now be inviting authors to submit extended abstracts with a 1k-1.5K word limit.

·         The program will be organized in a way to support attendance across multiple time zones and will allow our authors to safely connect. All presentations will also be recorded and made available to registered attendees for a limited time after the conference.

·         Publication of Pre-prints and Datasets: To promote your work during and after the conference, authors of accepted papers (extended abstracts) are encouraged to share their work as a pre-print via EasyChair Preprint. The University of Warwick is seeking to appoint two full-time, postdoctoral researchers based at the Department of Psychology, as part of an ERC-funded research awarded to Professor Gordon Brown. The posts are available to start as soon as possible on or after 1st October 2021. The project concerns people?s preferences, values and choices and the relation of these to social influence, markets, and phenomena such as income inequality, political polarization and nationalism.

Strong candidates are likely to have interests in at least some of political psychology, cognitive modelling, judgement and decision-making research,  econometrics, computer programming, or experimental design. An interdisciplinary perspective is essential. 

The positions are for two years in the first instance, with a possible extension of an additional year. Closing date is October 5th 2021.

?Societal Conflicts: Collective Action in an Unequal World?

Center for Conflict Studies, University of Marburg

Classical conflict theories often understand conflict as a universal 
feature of society. But there is variation. Over the last decades, in 
different countries and continents, we have seen a rise of societal 
conflicts, epitomized in a growing number of street-level collective 
action. At the same time, economists and social scientists have observed 
a fairly generalized increase in economic and concomitant political 
inequalities within societies. This begs the question of whether and how 
these trends are related. Does politics become more contentious when 
inequality increases? How does collective action unveil, contest, or 
even co-produce inequalities? What kind of inequalities are in the focus 
of collective action and which ones remain at different levels of 
conflict, and why? The Zentrumstage 2022 conference seeks to bring 
together scholars to study societal conflicts, and the roles that 
inequality and collective action play in them.

The salience of inequality and collective action in conflict is apparent 
in different types of conflict and at different stages of the conflict 
process. Inequality can serve as an underlying driver for conflicts or 
can help prevent them. Inequality affects the resources available for 
parties in confrontation, and the strategies that actors take in 
conflict settings. Meanwhile, the conflict process redistributes 
resources and power in a way that reconfigures inequalities, and the 
aftermath of conflicts brings about new patterns of social relations, 
legitimacy claims, and new exclusions. But inequalities themselves are 
usually not enough to explain conflict. In order to organize successful 
protests, disadvantaged actors need to frame their perceived injustices 
and overcome collective action problems. Their ability to negotiate 
these processes will influence conflict strategies and processes, and 
their capacity to stake new claims as conflict escalates and de-escalates.

By focusing on inequality and collective action in the study of 
conflict, we hope to enrich the academic debate in conflict studies. We 
invite contributions on the relationship of inequalities and collective 
action and their respective role for societal conflicts. We welcome 
papers from a variety of disciplines (conflict studies, social movement 
studies, political science, gender studies, area studies, economics, 
psychology, anthropology, sociology and others) drawing on a variety of 
methodologies (qualitative, theoretical, and quantitative). We also 
welcome research on topics associated with either high-intensity 
societal conflicts, such as armed conflict or violent protests, or 
low-intensity conflicts, such as peaceful protests, redistribution 
claims, coalition dynamics, etc. Examples of suitable topics would be:

? collective action in unequal societies
? social justice and inequalities
? different types of inequality and their contestation
? peaceful protests
? local peacebuilding
? democratic and anti-democratic social movements
? inequality in transitional justice movements
? social movements online

To apply, please submit an abstract of no more than 400 words to 
ccs2022 at staff.uni-marburg.de by the 24th of January 2022. Please 
indicate if you are a PhD student, Postdoc, or (Assistant, Associate, or 
Full) Professor as well as if you are based in an institution in the 
Global South. The conference language will be English.

We are currently applying for funding and, if successful, we might be 
able to offer some travel and/ or accommodation grants for presenters. 
However, for the moment, we cannot guarantee any travel or accommodation 
funding.
